Women Employment Program

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) proudly joins the Nation in celebrating Women’s History Month during the month of March. This year’s theme is “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment,” which encourages all to reflect on the history of women’s education and the impact education has had on career development and professional career success.

The struggle for women’s equality in education has been a hard, long fought battle until 1976, when Title IX of the Education Codes of the Higher Education Act Amendment was implemented. Today, women are an integral part of the education system as students, educators, and administrators. Women’s achievements in education have opened the doors of opportunity for women, not only in education, but also in employment and career progression, leading to a stronger women’s presence in the workforce. As of September 30, 2011, VA educational attainment data showed that at least 66.3 percent of women in VA’s workforce have achieved some type of postsecondary degree (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, Professional, or Doctorate).

VA continues to monitor its efforts to ensure all employees, including women, are included in all occupations, at all levels in the VA. As of December 31, 2011, women represented 59.6 percent of VA’s permanent workforce, compared to their expected representation rate of 64.8 percent. Women represent approximately 62.8 percent of VA’s leadership pipeline (GS/GM 12, 13, & 14), but only 35 percent of the senior leadership ranks (GS-15 and Senior Executive Service). The VA also provides service to and recognizes the military service and contributions of women Veterans. Today, there are over 1.8 million women Veterans, representing 8.3 percent of the total Veteran population.

Employees, managers, and supervisors are encouraged to participate and to also support employee attendance at meaningful activities to recognize and appreciate the many contributions and accomplishments of women in and outside of VA’s workforce.
